As we all transitioned from in-office work to remote-work in 2020, JPL's cafeteria and food services, which were used to serving hundreds of people a day, had to adjust their operations and reduced their offerings. As a result, the cafeterias became overcrowded during peak hours which dissuaded people from eating on-site.

The Cafepop project received internal funding to better anticipate and report how busy the cafeterias are. This would help inform folks how busy cafeterias are. A secondary goal of the project was to develop an internal people counter product similar to [Density's](https://density.io) - since having an accurate count of people on Lab could help better understand how we use the space and provide better workplace experiences.
